I must state that anyone giving any Lexmark printer a good review has just bought it for a magazine review, and not really used it over months.

I used 'are' and not 'is' because they change model numbers every 3 months, so just because you aren't buying S605 doesn't mean they have a good product.

This is my first and last Lexmark. HP has gotten cheaper and worse on its printers over time, but they are a lot better than Lexmark.

Firstly, you will wrestle for hours trying to put the slender color ink cartridges in - and when you get one half way in, but not clipped in, the printer "being smart" will move the whole gizmo away thinking it is time for a printer test! And the ink goes FAST. So you will have to do this manuever often. The black ink that comes with the initial purchase will print 15 pages of full color (color includes black) then be out. You can buy a 3X black refill, but come on, why ship with a useless cartridge unless you are intentionally ripping customers off? I get, it, you can make the retail price low by making a poor product, and including no ink, but seriously, this is insulting.

Also, my printer keeps doing self checks. I have to power it completely off or it will start up magically every few hours when I am trying to sleep in the same room. Why? What useful function can it be doing? And no, I do not have Fax or auto-answer enabled.

It is nice to put a stack of documents in the fax entry and scan them to a single pdf. Too bad, if they are not perfect (i.e. minor curls are not), not all sheets will feed. It loves to leave the last sheet not fed. Great, I have a pdf of 9 out of 10 sheets. Useless.

The scanning software that comes with this is substandard. HP had a scan system that previewed the image so you could crop, rotate, choose color/bw etc. The software installe don your PC has none of that. Scan and it will save it to PPT or jpg. Then you need to use a photo editor to crop it/rotate.

The auto detect looking for photo cards needs to be debugged. When you have a memory card from your camera, it works fine. But plug an ipod into another USB port, or sometimes even a USB drive (if it has jpg files on it) - and Lexmark gets confused that those just might be from a camera. So, if you are trying to sync your ipod shuffle, it will keep disconnecting. I can't autofill anymore. I have to manually drag songs over, maybe 10 will copy over, before Lexmark "gets smart" even though I selected preference for it NOT to try to read that drive letter. So, I manually drag songs from my music library in itunes, then click 'skip' in case I grabbed some that did make it over before. It takes forever, and did not happen when I had an HP all-in-one attached. I will say, that my HP driver had a conflict with my system, so after a week or so, I could not scan, and would have to unintally, reinstall. Pain, which is why I looked for another vendor. The printer, fax, memory card reader always worked on the HP, just not the scanning after a while.

And ALL the Lexmark models that look like this (I looked in all of them at the store), have no way to open up the middle. Yes, you can open to see a window with the ink cartridges, but you can't move that frame out. I asked the salesmen, how do you clear a paper jam. He said, he's had one for months and never had a jam. Sales guys are required to lie, apparently.

Stay away from this printer manufacturer unless you like junk. The higher cost (more feature) models have the same ink, software and inability get inside to clear a jam. Just because they have various snazzy touch screens, wireless, etc. is still putting lipstick on a pig.
